Hand taps and hand tap sets

Professional hand taps are used to achieve a complete, reliable screw thread in several steps. The hand taps from our range comply with general worldwide standards, including DIN and ISO. In addition to the difference in construction sizes, ISO and DIN hand taps also differ in their operation. Where a DIN hand tap cuts the screw thread to size radially in 3 steps, an ISO hand tap works towards the right end result using various lead lengths. Both versions of the hand tap have a metric shank diameter.

The hand taps range comprises a value-for-money ECO model from International Tools or a top-quality specialised steam-tempered hand tap from Phantom. The steam-tempered hand tap reduces friction in tricky materials, thereby increasing the service life when used on these materials. The right hand tap is chosen by correctly estimating the use on the material to be threaded.

Hand taps and hand tap sets

Professional hand tap: multiple steps

A professional DIN hand tap for metric threads comprises a pre-cutter, an intermediate cutter and an end cutter to achieve approved screw threads. All 3 hand-tap cutters must be used when threading in order to accurately cut the screw thread and, in particular, when the screw thread is a little deeper. Furthermore, in the case of larger dimensions, the cutting force is better distributed across the 3 cutters. The separate cutters of DIN hand taps are clearly marked to indicate to which of the 3 parts they correspond.

The pre-cutter is the 1st tap and is characterised by 1 groove in the tap. It cuts away the initial material. The intermediate cutter can be recognised by 2 grooves in the tap which cuts a little deeper into the material. The end cutter without any marking cuts the full depth of the screw thread.

Tip: use sufficient cutting oil, particularly with deep holes! This ensures a smoother screw thread and a longer service life for the tap.

Complete hand tap set

In order to be able to use the hand taps for longer and to ensure you can lay your hands on them time and again, a hand tap set has been developed for the most common sizes. Complete combination of sets with tap wrenches or tap chucks and thread dies are also available . The set consists of sizes from M3 to M12 which means they also include the most popular M6, M8 and M10 hand taps.
